Czech National Concert Band Performs Dutch Wind Music in Hradec Králové

On Monday, 27 October, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Hradec Králové resonated with the sounds of symphonic wind music performed by the Czech National Concert Band. The concert was conducted by the Dutch conductor Joop Boerstoel, the current President of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE).

Joop Boerstel is a highly respected figure in the world of symphonic wind music. In his native Netherlands, he is best known for his work with amateur and youth ensembles and has long been one of the leading advocates of the symphonic wind repertoire. His precise conducting and exceptional attention to detail gave the performance a truly remarkable atmosphere.

The evening’s programme was devoted entirely to Dutch composers, offering the audience a unique opportunity to explore the rich tradition of Dutch symphonic wind music.

The concert featured Martin Chmelař, principal trombonist of the Band of the Castle Guard and Police of the Czech Republic, as soloist. He delivered a brilliant performance of the first movement from Johan de Meij’s Trombone Concerto.

Earlier that Monday morning, Joop Boerstel led a seminar on Dutch symphonic wind music at the Přelouč Elementary School of Arts. During the session, he introduced students to the history and development of Dutch wind music, highlighted the composers and ensembles that have shaped the genre, and discussed current trends in contemporary symphonic wind repertoire.

The Czech National Concert Band’s concert in Hradec Králové demonstrated that symphonic wind music holds a strong position on the Czech musical scene and continues to captivate both professional musicians and the wider public.
